Own the software you run

By Jordan Vance · · 1 min read

For fifteen years the answer to "what software should we use?" has been "whatever you can subscribe to." It's easy to start, easy to expense, and easy to forget you're paying forever. But renting has a cost that doesn't show up on the invoice: you don't own the thing your business runs on.

The subscription treadmill

Every tool adds a per-seat fee. Add a few tools, add a few people, and you're paying more each year for software you'll never own. Stop paying and it all switches off, including your data.

What ownership changes

When you buy a product outright and get the source code, a few things flip:

  • Costs stop compounding. One price, then it's yours.
  • Your data stays yours. It runs on your infrastructure.
  • You can change it. Need a field, a workflow, an integration? Edit the code.

That's not the right trade for everyone. But for a business running a stable, well-understood workflow, support, billing, field service, owning the tool is often cheaper and safer than renting it.

Where to start

You don't have to build it. Buy a finished product, deploy it (or have us do it), and you're running software you own. That's the whole idea behind Nanobox.
